Güngören Veysel Karani Mosque
In mosques, the sacred is perceived not through explicit symbols, but through space, light, and spatial simplicity. Mosque transforms a departure from the dense and dynamic urban fabric of Güngören into a gradual spatial experience. The inner courtyard serves as the first point of arrival, welcoming visitors. Ascending volumes and filtered natural light guide them towards the prayer hall, supporting a transition from the pace of the outside world to a state of inner tranquillity. Entrances from different points provide direct access to the various functions within the complex. Small shops lining the street-facing edge contribute to public life, while the permeable passage formed between the building volumes draws visitors into the courtyard, integrating the complex's social and educational facilities with the surrounding urban fabric.
The traditional mosque typology is reinterpreted through a contemporary architectural approach. The idea of the presence of God is reflected indirectly in space through the symbolic order established by the architecture. The dome evokes an opening towards the sky, mediating the relationship between the divine and the mortal within the spatial experience. Removed from the complexities of everyday life, worshippers are invited into a quiet retreat, where their relationship with the sky becomes a source of contemplation and serenity.
