FREA Presented İzmir Projects from a Climate and Ecology Perspective
May 13, 2025

Fatih Yavuz and Emre Şavural, the founders of FREA Architecture, shared the projects they have produced in İzmir in recent years and the discussions they have opened within the framework of these projects at the “Consciousness Workshop 2025”, which was held for the second time on 7 May 2025 by the İzmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) Building Community. Expert speakers from different disciplines were invited to the two-day workshop held with the themes of ‘earthquake, fire safety and ecological sustainability’. FREA presented the architectural discipline’s approach to these issues to an audience of academics, civil society organisations, and students. On the same day, at the invitation of the İzmir Architecture Centre, they addressed an audience from the fields of architecture and urban planning with their presentation titled “How Should We Build? Projects from the Perspective of Climate and Ecology in İzmir”.
Based on the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (Izmir SECAP) prepared by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, they explained their projects, processes and discussions, which aim to reduce total greenhouse gas emissions, reduce carbon emissions including building design and construction processes, and create open spaces and natural parks against the high-density urban fabric. The focal projects and settlements included S-Hub: İzmir Sustainability Centre, OliVelo: Ecological Co-living Space in İzmir, Another Kind of Agricultural School and Technopark Izmir South Campus Masterplan, some of which have received awards in national architectural competitions organised by the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.
