FREA at the Kayseri Architecture Festival with the Presentation ‘A Climate Machine in Salute to Le Corbusier’

FREA Architecture founders Fatih Yavuz and Emre Şavural were invited to the 4th Kayseri Architecture Festival on Saturday, October 4, where they delivered a presentation titled “A Climate Machine in Salute to Le Corbusier.” Organized by the Kayseri Chapter of the Chamber of Architects under the curatorship of Melis Varkal, the festival was held at Kayseri Castle this year and hosted a large audience of architects, students, and city residents under the theme “New Communities: The Architecture of Living Together.”

FREA presented the project “S-HUB: İzmir Sustainability Center,” which they describe as a circular building model for sustainability in İzmir, a space of possibilities, and—referencing Le Corbusier’s definition of the “house” as a “machine for living”—“a climate machine.” S-Hub, a competition proposal for a green and event area located at the edge of İzmir Bay, received the second prize in the competition’s final stage.

The starting point of S-Hub was shaped by ideas triggered by the question: “Isn’t the construction industry responsible for nearly half of the world’s annual carbon emissions?” In their visually rich presentation, FREA addressed the unresolved issues caused by rebuilding, building bigger, and holding on to conventional methods. They framed the S-Hub project within a strategy that focuses on the procurement of new construction material through the reuse, recycling, and advanced re-processing of construction and demolition waste—including materials found on the site itself.
